Why the I-35 run takes longer than the map says
Pflugerville sits about 18 miles north of Austin and counted 65,191 residents at the 2020 census. San Marcos, down the same interstate between Austin and San Antonio, counted 67,553. Two towns of that size sending trucks down one highway means a lot of shared pavement.
On a map the trip looks like a straight shot south of roughly 45 miles. A loaded truck rarely sees that. It has to cross the whole of Austin on the way, and the stretch through the middle of the city is where a Friday afternoon or a first-of-the-month morning turns a one-hour drive into two. Heavy trucks also run slower than cars on the climbs and in the merge lanes.
Our advice is to book an early start, ideally loading by eight, so the truck is through central Austin before the lunch crowd and the commuters fill the lanes. A mid-week move costs less in patience as well as in dollars.
Five questions to ask any mover about a north-to-south Austin move
First, ask how the price is built. For a local job it is usually hourly with a minimum, but a trip of this length may add a travel charge, so ask whether the clock starts at your door or at their yard.
Second, ask who is on the crew and whether they are employees. Third, ask what the mover covers if something breaks, and get the answer in writing rather than over the phone.
Fourth, ask for the mover's state registration. In Texas, household goods movers are registered with the state, and a legitimate company can give you its number without any fuss. Fifth, ask what happens if the truck runs late because of traffic, since that is the single most likely thing to go sideways on this route.
Moving to or from Texas State University in San Marcos
San Marcos is the home of Texas State University, so the calendar there is different from the rest of the metro. Late May, early August and the weekends around the start of each semester are crowded, and student apartments often have tight move-in windows.
If you are helping a student, measure the doorways and ask the complex about elevators, parking for a truck and any hours when moving is not allowed. A small load of boxes, a mattress and a desk is often a better fit for a labor crew and a smaller truck than a full-size one. If you are going the other way, from San Marcos up to Pflugerville after graduation or a first job, the same advice holds in reverse: tell the mover about stairs and long carries early.
Who handles the San Marcos end
Our work is centred on Pflugerville, Round Rock, Hutto and the north side of Austin, and we would rather say so than stretch a crew thin across the corridor.
For moves that start or finish in San Marcos, the crew we point people to is Bobcat Movers, and their San Marcos page shows a Texas DMV registration number, which is the kind of detail worth checking for any company you hire.
Whoever you choose, ask them to confirm the full address at both ends, the floor, and the parking before the quote is final.
Moving-day checklist
The night before, empty and defrost the fridge if it is going, pack a bag with chargers, medication and a change of clothes, and photograph anything valuable. Keep paperwork, keys and a few tools with you rather than on the truck.
On the morning, walk the crew through each room and point out the fragile pieces. Check the inventory before you sign, look over the unloading area at the new place, and take photos of any damage before the crew leaves. Tip, water and a plan for lunch make a long I-35 day go more smoothly for everyone.
